Kiev is a beautiful
city with its marvelous hills and unique sightseeing. Having bunch
of trees and flowers it is always associated with chestnuts. Kiev
architectural landscape is unique. Due to the huge number of orthodox
churches it is called sometimes the Gold-Domed city.
Like San Francisco,
Kiev has a famous Golden Gate. It's the remnant of a fortified wall
that protected this former capital of the Kievan Russian Empire
in the 11th and 12th centuries. This recently reconstructed remains
of the former fortified wall of the city defined the limits of the
city in centuries past. Nowadays, Kiev is the capital of newly independent
Ukraine.
Kiev is situated in
north central Ukraine, astride the Dnipro River, which flows south
to the Black Sea.
The art and architecture
of Kyiv are world treasures. You will see the highlights of it during
our sightseeing tours. Kievan architecture reflects Ukraine's Orthodox
Christian religious heritage. The grand Cathedral of St. Sophia
was once the site for royal coronations, and features beautiful
11th century frescoes. A short trolley ride from downtown is the
Percherska Lavra Monestery of the Caves, with its two cathedrals,
bell tower, museums, and famed catacombs. Overlooking the old section
of Kyiv, Podol, stands the Ukrainian Baroque church of St. Andrew,
much beloved by Ukrainians.
Rebuilt since the devastation
of World War II, Kiev boasts other attractions like Old Town, on
the Dnipro's elevated right bank, plus lots of woods and parks.
That's along with a full complement of arts institutions, like the
Kiev Opera House and innovative Kiev Young Theater.
Ukrainian pottery,
embroidery, and handicrafts are available throughout the city, particularly
in shops on Andrievsky Uzviz, at Percherska Lavra, and St. Sophia's
church.
